Because of the growing concern of our children being exposed to asbestos, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) in 1986 to protect our kids. This act also protects school employees from being exposed to asbestos in school buildings.

There are many requirements outlined in the act that are set by our federal government. When asbestos is inhaled, it can seriously affect the operation of the lungs. Asbestos exposure can lead to cancer. Some types of diseases and cancer linked to asbestos exposure are Asbestosis, Lung Cancer, and Mesothelioma. Symptoms of asbestos exposure are not quick to appear and may take decades to produce symptoms.
